Default Is an AoE Ranger/Ele viable?

I just started Guild Wars, so I'm new to the game but not the genre. I have always liked Ranger-type classes so I naturally gravitated towards one in GW. The Elementalist looked interesting as well. I wondered about the viability of combining the AoE aspects of both classes. Has anyone tried this? Is it viable (both PvE and PvP)? I haven't fleshed out a full build, but it would entail using Barrage, Favorable Winds, Tiger's Fury, Conjure Flame (with a Fiery bowstring), Fireball and Fire Storm. Is that overkill? Is it just a bad idea? I'd like some feedback from the experienced Rangers out there.

Bad idea.
Firestorm is just crap all around, monsters and people will move out of it.
You dont have enough points into fire to make fireball do anything.
Conjure flame is good though +1 there.
Barrage is an excellent skill for PvE, espically with Necro Orders up,but alas
it is not good in PvP. (although I have seen some pre-orders nerg barrage way teams do good in HoH)

Rangers won't have nearly enough energy to sustain elementalist damage spells, and sadly, said spells aren't too great anyway.

Well now I would say there is one AoE, but a very limited range one, that works well for some ranger types. Maelstrom, used as a snare, is a great compliment to some of the other ranger abilities including traps however a successful trap build utilizes too many ranger specific skills to allow for much change in them the trap ranger skill set is rather well defined. But Barrage + Maelstrom would be nice. Energy management is your only real concern since expertise will not cut down on your ele spells energy costs. It's possible but there are better builds to give more bang for your attribute point buck.

I gotcha. Thanks for the replies! So it would seem a ranger is best as a sniper if you are going bow. Is that pretty much it?

Rangers are a multi talented class. They can be effective long distance damage dealers. They can do massive AoE effects with their traps that enemies do not run from. They can be one of the most potent anti-caster weapons in a PvP or PvE team's. Rangers are one of the easier characters to solo with since they have good self heals the ability to slow enemies and keep themselves at range while handing out some pretty heavy damage. It all comes down to what you want to do with the character. For farming traps can't be beat and you'll never even have to pick up a bow with traps.

well being a r/e my self i pretty much like using firestorm. i give you that his spell has its downsides put it can be pretty effective. you just have to use it the right way. it can be really powerfull in a location where its tight and you cant get out of its reach that easily. It also works pretty good to distract healers. true theycan steo out of it, but then they cant heal for one or two seconds which might be enough to finish an opponent off. Using meteorstorm is much more effective since it has a knockdown, but given the fact, that it costs lots of energy i dont use it that much.

i also dont agree that you cant deal much damage with spells as a r/e. i dont know what you guys rate as big damage, but my fireball hits at around 70-80 damage, and with good timing the damage goes against more than just one foe.

i am still playing the campaign and have not tried pvp with my ranger so i cant comment on that, but i think my ranger will do okay there too.
